So the spread option in not effective? Many of the teams run it at this time, and it works for them.
who
I think the option and Powerfootball could work with the right talent however it will be tough to recrute top prospects becouse other programs can promise to get them ready for the Pros and until a Pro team pulls out the Power I or the Flex Bone An old school type offince will be against the wall recruting wise.
BTW I do not like the spread option for the same reason it will only have moderat success for any team in a Major confrence
The option offense could still work in college football.
it takes great recruiting, and a great coach.
It takes great playcalling for it to work......the perfect balance of run/pass....................Tom Osbourne is the perfect example.
and about the spread option...........West Va is making it look very good........I want to see how successful it is, against the bulldogs here in a few days.
WV is in the worst of the Major conferences in fact I don't know that the BE should even be considered a Major conference at this point in time.
Gimmick offenses are basically garbage if youre a program that wants to win a national championship. Look at USC, Miami, Oklahoma, LSU, FSU, UF under spurrier. All of these teams basically played straight up, little to no trickery. Teams that have to resort to running gimmicky offenses are teams that arent good enough to win a national title.
Texas is possibly the first team in a long time that runs an offense thats not really traditional. Young may be good enough to win a national title but its not the norm to have that type of offense and win the whole thing. What Callahan is doing in theory is great, I just dont know if he will be able to have enough talent to become a title contender.
When I say Texas is Gimmicky, I mean they run alot of junk out of the shotgun with a ton of wrinkles that are gadget plays that most teams in the past never ran. Pro style offenses are generally the norm when it comes to success in college football, even now.

Are you serious? The Fun N Gun was full of gimmicks. Look at when they would go muddle huddle against UT and such. That is what Spurrier lived off of. Oklahoma also uses a variation of the spread option for their running game too.
I wouldnt call what florida did gimmicky at all, heck the run and shoot is less gimmicky than most college offenses these days. My biggest issue with his offense is the pass protection wasnt good at all and it got smashed in big games. Some of florida's best games were when Spurrier played some smash mouth and got Fred Taylor and Ernest Graham the ball between the tackles.
Yes oklahoma ran out of the shotgun with QG alot but that was moreso because they didnt have a feature back. When they got Peterson they become an I formation team on 85% of the count. Kewan Jones still runs some out of the gun, but rarely does Peterson.
I guess what Im trying to say is teams might throw a few gimmicks out there(like spurrier as you say) but they have a base that they thrive off of to begin with.

That exactly describes Florida under Spurrier.
